wrote to colleges & universities listed in a thick guide. Schools would mail their latest bulletin and other items relevant to application. By start of my senior year of high school, I had a couple of shelves of bulletins. I wanted to go to college. College represented freedom.
On a beautiful spring afternoon in 1975, most of DePauw was shut down when many of us believed the American Association of University Professors was correct when it determined DePauw, in denying tenure to a professor, had violated his academic freedom. 2/7
Academic freedom is critical at all levels & in all areas of education. Example: A minority of those who espouse Christianity display ignorance as they (often mockingly) say evolution only is a “theory,” i.e., little more than a guess. The Field Museum notes: 3/7
“A theory is a carefully thought-out explanation for observations of the natural world that has been constructed using the scientific method, and which brings together many facts and hypotheses.” Evolution is nearly universally accepted by life scientists. Ignorance plays out 4/7
in a people who reject evolution but can’t see why antibiotics don’t work as before. (Answer: targeted organisms evolved.) It’s bad enough that theocracy creeps into grade & high schools. Now they want to impose their minority views on everyone. Important: 5/7
G. Edward Griffin, a writer who embraces, in one lecture, more conspiracy theories than set out in all of The Bourne Identity series, says they only need 15% of the people to prevail in this “war.” We no longer are watching a fictional “Idiocracy.” This is very real. 6/7
We have to stop the dumbing down by theocratic elements of the right wing. They are the enemy. I’m Mark Small: pro-choice, pro-separation of church & State, anti-gun GOP candidate for Indiana House Distr 86. I approve of this blog. Hell, I wrote it. 7/7
