Tomorrow night is the *State of the Union address. The *Constitution [FN1] does not require a speech. [FN2] From Jefferson’s first term through the presidency of Taft, a written message was delivered to *Congress. [FN3] Usually a boring affair, it now is somewhat “upbeat.” 1/9
Last year, as shortly after his arrival at The * Capitol, and as he made his way to the rostrum in the * Chamber of the * House of Representatives, #47 stopped and thanked John Roberts, CJ of the *SCOTUS. [FN4] There definitely were notes of history in that exchange. 2/9
Whether it be cinematic history (scene near the start of “The Untouchables”) or the mundane chores of a real estate developer in *Manhattan, envelopes stuffed with cash are key. That is the sign of a payoff for work well done. That kind of handoff, in front of millions of TV 3/9
viewers, takes years of practice & a pouch, sewed into the robes, big enough to make a kangaroo blush. . And hey, the *Roberts 6 had conferred upon trump immunity of a type never considered by those Framers in 1787. But you’re only as good as your latest hit. 4/9
Last week, any warmth trump might have felt toward Johnny Bob was blown away by winds as cold as NYC felt today. They said trump can’t just order *Tariffs. So we need to watch. Will trump try to get that envelope stuffed with cash back? We’ll know tomorrow. 5/9
And any place a * has appeared in tonight’s blog is placed before a phrase. We might not have free elections again. If not, trump will try to put his name, in tacky faux gold, before anything and everything. And tomorrow he might try to give the *CJ a fish wrapped in newspaper. 6/9
