Where the far left and far right overlap for fun and enlightenment

Reality show to one-up all reality shows: an Article V convention, part 4.5

Heritage Foundation and [FN16] ALEC [FN17] are far right-wing & write proposed statutes and outline plans for what is a divestiture of the rights protected by the Constitution. An Article 5 convention allows them to replace the Constitution w/a “new republic.” 1/12

I. They can advocate for a convention “under the radar.” I.e., because billionaires bought media by which we get info, they can lie. A former public editor of the New York Times [FN18] listed who bought what [FN19] & described how they’ve inserted themselves. [FN20] 2/12

II. As run-up to the convention they can use spectacle + a manufactured drama storyline to mesmerize the public & get as many as possible to get wrapped up in that diversion. As they get ready to get everything they’ve wanted. 3/12

III. The wish list: random thoughts here, to which I’ll add later:
Add, or remove, from our charter of government:
A) Define “people” to include corporate entities and then create several million new voters in blue States;
B) Define embryos & fetuses as people, as one more way to control women.
C) [Like I said, I’ll add to this] 4/12

IV. There are 3 reasons that Article V will be invoked to “rewrite” the Constitution & ignore any attempt to stop it.
A) The only precedent we have is that 1787 convention & it went off the rails.
B) The $$$ & power on their side is huge: billionaires + foreign dictators.
C) The wording of Art V means they have to. 5/12

Art V states, in relevant part: “The Congress ... on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a convention for proposing Amendments.” [FN21] That does not give Congress latitude to call a convention for a specific amendment, but 6/12

Congress has latitude in mode of ratification: “when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress...” [FN22] 7/12

I’m not surprised that the same people who are anti-choice are so willing to toss the baby out with the bath water and call for a convention. A convention cannot even be limited, once called, to categories of amendments. 8/12
