In less than a month, trump is set to take the oath of office & impose dictatorship. In the face of this emergency, leadership of the Democratic Party seems rooted in a quaint past. An email from former Attorney General Eric Holder, dated 12/26/24, seems odd. The subject line: 1/8
“This is not a time for acceptance and resignation - this is the time for commitment and action.” The “action” consists of litigating against attacks on our system of equality & fair elections, & that takes $. The pitch for donations is understood, but won’t help on & after Jan 20. 2/8
Dictatorships do not follow “rule of law.” [FN1] Former A.G. Holder says that the “only check left on his power is us. It’s the power of the people: a power that is too often underestimated and too infrequently used.” People have shown up at the polls. Many of us believe that trump 3/8
lost at the polls, but benefitted from election interference, gratis Putin, that gave trump the Oval Office in 2016. Plus, trump’s telling everyone what s/he will do once in office, and what s/he describes not only would violate, but would destroy the efficacy of, The Constitution. 4/8
The 14th Amendment disqualifies from office one who engaged in “insurrection or rebellion.” Its aim, written in the aftermath of the Civil War, was “to have something in the Constitution to deal w/future insurrections.” [FN2] I’d add: just like this. History teaches us what lies ahead. 5/8
In 1933, few foresaw genocide, on an industrial scale, carried out in Germany. Today, there are, in the USA, some who could be called Third Reich fans. Some also can be called nominees for posts if trump is sworn into office on Jan 20. Pres Biden must invoke emergency powers. 6/8
