The arts provide moments of escape from an increasingly mordant World. It was unsettling to read that Robert DeNiro referred, inaccurately, to Stephen Miller [FN1] as “the ‘Goebbels’ of [t]rump’s cabinet.” [FN2] [FN3] "’(He's) a Nazi!’ De Niro said.” [FN4] 1/13
There is no evidence that Miller is, or has ever been, a hate-filled, bigoted, racist member of the NSDAP. Rather, Miller has been been, a hate-filled, bigoted, racist person involved w/ the GOP and other “conservative” organizations. [FN5] Miller flipped out & called DeNiro a 2/13
"sad, bitter, broken old man" who "has been degrading himself on camera with one horrific film after another. [] He has not made a movie worth watching in at least 30 years." [FN6] One can’t deny Miller starkly assessed three decades of films by DeNiro, which include: 3/13
“Casino” (1995), “Jackie Brown” (1997), “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012), “Joker” (2019), “The Irishman” (2019) and “Killers of the Flower Moon.” (2023). His portrayal of Bernie Madoff, “The Wizard of Lies” (2017), was nominated for an Emmy as was his 4/13
recurring guest role as Robert Mueller on SNL (2019). He was nominated for Oscars in “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.” [FN7] My God! What an empty husk of a 30-year span of a career! Miller said no one takes DeNiro seriously. [FN8] 5/13
Except the people who nominate artists for Oscars and Emmys. There is one way to settle this. An “act off.” Nicolo Machiavelli is best known for his work “The Prince.” He also wrote plays, only one of which has survived. “Il Mandragola” or “The Mandrake” is a comedy. 6/13
Each of the 4 male leads offers a different aspect of the playwright’s personality. Any of the parts are do-able for DeNiro. He’s a great fucking actor. There are a Monk (I don’t see Miller in that role), a giggolo (Miller doesn’t fit the type), Ligurio (a fixer: no [FN9] & 7/13
a cuckold husband. There you go! For the giggolo they could cast Elon Musk, or is that too close to home? It wouldn’t matter. Once trump would catch wind of a play in which he could be all four leads at once? So let’s leave it with this: Miller’s full of shit. 8/13
Footnotes:
FN1. Miller is “homeland security advisor and deputy chief of staff” to the current POTUS. Taijuan Moorman, “After Robert De Niro called Stephen Miller a 'Nazi,' the political advisor fires back,” USA Today, 10/24/25. 9/13
FN2. The USA Today article misleads about the “Goebbels” to whom DeNiro refers as “Paul Goebbels [who] was the chief propagandist for the Nazi Party and one of Hitler's closest and most passionate followers.” Id. 10/13
FN3. Though his full name was Paul Joseph Goebbels (see Shirer, Wm., “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich,” (1990 ed.), p. 123) people called him Joseph or “Where’s my little Joe!?” (see “Springtime for Hitler,” whatever the hell the act.
