The difference between the Articles of Confederation (“Articles”) and the Constitution that replaced the Articles is that the Articles “were a compact between the states of America” and the Constitution was a charter of government by the people of America. [FN160] 3/12

A State that incorporated a religion into its government via its State constitution is relevant only to show what was not in the Constitution signed on 9/17/1787. MD and SC are examples of wording that could have been in a constitution creating a “Christian” country. 4/12

MD: ““all persons, professing the Christian religion, are equally entitled to protection in their religious liberty ... the Legislature may, in their discretion, lay a general and equal tax for the support of the Christian religion ...” [FN161] South Carolina went further: 5/12

Only free, white men “of the Protestant religion” were eligible for the senate (Art. XII), the house of representatives, or to vote. (Art XIII). “The Christian Protestant religion” was “declared to be, the established religion of this State.” (Art. XXXVIII). [FN162] 6/12

No such language was adopted by the Framers who wrote the Constitution in Philadelphia and advanced it for ratification by the States. Next up: VA, NY, NC. 7/12
