Patrick Henry: Give me liberty and give them death!

History: what this GOP & it shameful progeny SCOTUS try to void. Before too many books are burned, read The Anti-Federalist Papers. Amongst opponents of The Constitution, Patrick Henry on 6/5/1788 he spoke to VA’s ratification convention & complained: We the People instead 1/5

of We the States. He worried liberty would be lost. First: Henry favored States’ “rights” & The Constitution, he argued, denied that concept. So if someone tries to tell you States have rights & those rights are preserved in The Constitution, tell them about Patrick Henry. Second? 2/5

How the hell does Henry have credibility as a positive force? He claimed ownership over other human beings. There are no first-hand accounts of Henry making such a speech, but 35 years later, in the runup to The War of 1812, a biographer said Henry gave that speech. otoh...3/5

We have a letter in which Henry wrote to a cousin that slaves were so convenient. Henry's line would have been more accurate had he said: "Give me liberty! Give them death!" but that doesn't carry the same effect on a crowd. But if some want to erase slavery from our history, erase 4/5

slave holders, too. If slaves make today’s white children today uncomfortable, people who owned & raped slaves have the same effect on Black children. I’m Mark Small: pro-choice, pro-civil rts anti-gun GOP candidate for IN House Distr 86. I approve of this blog. Hell, I wrote it. 5/5
