of We the States. He worried liberty would be lost. First: Henry favored States’ “rights” & The Constitution, he argued, denied that concept. So if someone tries to tell you States have rights & those rights are preserved in The Constitution, tell them about Patrick Henry. Second? 2/5
How the hell does Henry have credibility as a positive force? He claimed ownership over other human beings. There are no first-hand accounts of Henry making such a speech, but 35 years later, in the runup to The War of 1812, a biographer said Henry gave that speech. otoh...3/5
We have a letter in which Henry wrote to a cousin that slaves were so convenient. Henry's line would have been more accurate had he said: "Give me liberty! Give them death!" but that doesn't carry the same effect on a crowd. But if some want to erase slavery from our history, erase 4/5
