Cynicism about U.S. military involvement in Vietnam [FN1] ran high in the 1970s. [FN2] One of the first movies about U.S. military in Vietnam [FN3] was “Apocalypse Now.” In a memorable scene, a major, played by Robert Duvall, revels in an attack on a village for the surf: 1/10
“Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for twelve hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. ... 2/10
“The smell, you know, the gasoline smell? The whole hill. Smelled like... victory". This morning, trump posted a faux movie poster w/a title of “Chipocalypse Now” and trump’s face on Duvall’s character’s body. Choppers are on the attack, behind them Chicago’s skyline.... 3/10
The captions: “I love the smell of deportations in the morning...” and “Chicago about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR” [FN4] So we have the person who occupies the Oval Office thinking it’s cute to post a threat of “WAR” against the people of Chicago. 4/10
Want to defend him by saying “He only said ‘deportations”? We need to shove aside stupidity. A scene of “WAR” (his choice of word) against Chicago is based on a scene from satire of murder in a military action. [FN5] I apologize for “dink” [FN6] but that’s in the script.... 5/10
The imbecile in the Oval Office last week ordered 11 people, off Venezuela’s coast, murdered. “Illegal aliens” was not a winning claim. [FN7] How about drugs? Where? There’s no place for storage. [FN8] He’s normalizing traits of a police state. 6/10
Someone asked yesterday, if he isn’t a stooge for Putin, what more could Putin have done? The person in the Oval Office had it stolen for him in 2024 and in 2016. He wants to have a WAR department. We should deny that to him & clean house. 7/10
Footnotes:
FN1. “Vietnam war” is shorthand for U.S. military involvement in Southeast Asia, but no “war” was declared (U.S. Const. Art. I, sec. 8) & included Cambodia, Laos and Thailand.
FN2. This was after the Russian asset who occupies the Oval Office ducked service because his daddy cut a few checks for a written excuse (“bone spurs”) to stay home. 8/10
FN3. I do not include “The Green Berets” (1968), starring John Wayne (who also dodged the draft, but in WW2), because the movie was about Hollywood. (Wayne’s character and an Asian kid watch the sun set over the “China Sea” & that’s east.)
FN4. Caps & spelling as in the original.
FN5. Again, our military involvement as described in FN1. 9/10
FN6. Michael Herr, in “Dispatches” (1977) describes “dink” as a slur against Vietnamese people.
FN7. Even the dumbass WH press aides couldn’t sell that excuse: > 1K miles to travel w/o belongings or enough fuel.
FN8. Drug cartel people maximize loads in the news & on film. Or: ask RFK, Jr. 10/10
