Censorship does not improve education

trumpist U.S. Rep. Cawthorn (R-NC) hired Terre Haute attorney James Bopp, Jr., in a challenge, brought by several NC lawyers, to Cawthorn’s candidacy for re-election. The challenge is based on The Constitution: No person shall hold office “having previously taken an oath... 1/6

to support the Constitution” who engages “in insurrection or rebellion...” Mr Bopp is scheduled to speak at a gathering in Indy on Jan. 29. Topic: “SEL in Schools + Medical Freedom in Courts and Medicine.” SEL is “Social Emotional Learning”: 2/6

children & adults acquire/effectively apply knowl/attitudes/skills necessary 2 understand/manage emotions, set/achieve + goals, feel/show empathy, establish/maintain + relationships & make responsible decisions. (Website: Social and Emotional Learning Alliance for Indiana.) 3/6

Joining Mr Bopp: Tony Kinnett, an IPS STEM teacher dismissed for criticism of Critical Race Theory (“CRT”); and Dr Dan Stock whose anti-vax claims have gone viral. Academic freedom is crucial to education. These speakers want to censor curricula & books. 4/6

I am unaware that such censorship will help U.S. students as they compare to students in other countries. (math 36th, reading 13th & science 18th of 79). Students’ education should not ignore prejudices that have plagued our country since its birth. Historical truths about slavery? 5/6

Pictures of scar tissue on the backs of former slaves SHOULD be uncomfortable to ALL students so that WE DO NOT REPEAT that history. As for Saturday, I value my health & won’t attend a “super spreader” event. That is why I didn’t list its time or location. 6/6
