Today, Friday, October 30, 2020, has been beautiful: the autumn air crisp, the trees about to lose the orange and gold and red leaves. As I walked across the parking lot at 10:20, about 700 people already were in line for early voting.
Sanctimonious horses’ asses say “Not willing to stand in line? You shouldn’t have the right to vote” without argument to support their judgment. Besides, people already have died for the right to vote - that’s payment enough. Plus I like the “I Vote/I…

This iteration of the Republican Party has sought to shut out, from participation in elections, people who are likely to vote against candidates of that party. The GOP has cited non-existent problems with “voter fraud” to take these actions.
Any political party in a free country should encourage every eligible voter to exercise the right to vote. The way in which to win a competition is not by taking cheap shots at the other side to cripple the competitor, through fear of its ability…

Social media responses to Bailey, et al v U.S., et al, SCOTUS docket 16-1464 overall are positive. A frequent comment, “I did not know about this case,” is explained by absence of mainstream media (“MSM”) coverage. Disclosure: I am counsel of record in Bailey, the only action to seek: (1) independent investigation of the 2016 election and, (2) if Russia illegally affected the results, the election be declared void. The case was set for conference 9/ 25/17. Disclosure: I am counsel of…

In Memphis on 4/3/68, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King said, in his last speech: “Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest for right.” On 5/17/57 at the Lincoln Memorial, Dr. King said, “So long as I do not firmly and irrevocably possess the right to vote I do not possess myself.”
I quote Dr. King because his life’s work for civil rights was inextricably tied with the right to vote.
The right to vote is the foundation for all of our rights. The most…

Morgan Freeman and Rob Reiner are great and courageous to have formed the Committee to Investigate Russia. Mr. Freeman stated we “have been attacked” and that we “are at war.”
The evidence of Russian attacks on our 2016 elections is beyond serious question. Russia hacked voting software in at least 21, and perhaps as many as 39, states; paid people in the Trump campaign; and weaponized the internet.
Russian President Vladimir Putin hates democratic principles and systems.…

If you have questions about where to vote in Marion County, Google Marion County Election Board—no, I still do not know how to “link” a page—and you can type in your address for the location of your polling site. You also can call 317.327.VOTE, but experience as a poll worker in elections past tells me the line is pretty busy on Election Day.
Whatever your predilections, you should vote. Even if you enter the poll and turn in a blank ballot, (1) your vote will count as a vote for…

Today at 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. we shall stream "live" from the main library downtown. Ask at the Information Desk where we are. Our guest panelists will be Sheila Suess Kennedy and Karen Celestino-Horseman. Our topic will be Jurisprudential philosophy and the Constitution. (The phrase "jurisdictional philosophy" is redundant. "Jurisprudence" is the philosophy of law.)
How does one go about construing the Constitution? All of our participants on The Show today are lawyers. The…

Taxpayers should not pay for improvements to a sports facility to increase its "curb appeal" for buyers.
I am opposed to governmental subsidies for sports. I am a fan of several sports. I love Major League Baseball(r) (Chicago Cubs) and college basketball. Given recent reports of brain trauma to players, I have to reconsider my interest in football at the professional and college levels. As a native-born Hoosier, a part of my DNA predisposes me to follow hoops. At least I follow…

I was born a fan of the Chicago Bears. I grew up watching Lindsey Nelson and CBS's broadcasts from Wrigley Field and its seemingly (perhaps actually) too-short end zones. The Bears did not win any championships during those years. Individual players were fun to watch. Gayle Sayers was awesome. The Chicago Tribune ran a front page photograph Dick Butkus as the middle linebacker sacked a quarterback and, fingers inserted through the guy's face mask, attempted to gouge at least one…

Here are some thoughts on today’s election. With three elections’ experience at the polls—not a lot, but enough
1) If there is any question about your ability to get to the polls, get there ASAP. Because the number of satellite sites for early voting were reduced, a lot of people may have to scramble for transportation today. See if someone can give you a lift.
2) Make sure you know where your polling site is. If you do not, go to the Marion County Voter Information…

I have been forced to deal so much with reality lately, I have forgotten how much fun the alternative fanciful debates of Mark Small and Paul Ogden can be.
Personally, Autumn is my favorite season of the year. It is not too cold. It is not too hot. And, unlike Spring, Autumn is often marked by low humidity. Cool, dry days and brisk nights!…

In his farewell address, President Dwight D. Eisenhower famously warned of the military-industrial complex. President Eisenhower was no left-wing pacifist. He held five stars as a general in the United States Army. He was Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces’ invasion of Normandy. He forced German civilians to tour death camps after allied forces liberated those camps, so that history could record—and others later be unable to deny—the atrocities committed by the Nazis.
Did…

Under Indiana law, biological parents are entitled to rights of visitation with their children. Absent marriage, once paternity is established, a biological father even may seek change of custody if he can convince the trial court that the mother is, in some way, unfit.
Maybe I missed something in the statutes and the guidelines for visitation, but there is "no exception for rape." No—I do not use this phrase in the context of laws that relate to abortion. I use the phrase as to…

In Griswold v. Connecticut, 381 U.S. 479 (1965), the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a Connecticut statute that not only prohibited the use of contraceptive devices, but made it a criminal offense for anyone to give out information of instruction on their use. The case is cited by many as having begun the concept of the right to privacy as a part of the U.S. Constitution. The concept goes back earlier in the Court’s history, though. In Oldstead v. United States, 277 U.S. 438…

All of us should be alarmed by Rick Santorum’s views. He is ignorant about history. For example, Thomas Jefferson argued for having the Feds in education during his 1806 State of the Union address. The public high school I attended took more of an interest in athletics than it did academics, but the skills I learned there enabled me to compete with others, and complete the degree requirements, at DePauw University.
Santorum chose to home-school his children. Home-schooling might…

The Indiana General Assembly is comprised of he House of Representatives (100 members) and the Senate (50 members). Members of the House serve two-year terms. Members of the Senate serve four-year terms. Every two years all of the seats of the House and half of the seats of the Senate are on the ballot.
That means all of the current members of the House and half of the members of the Senate (absent a member here or there who resigned because of scandal; such is politics) ran for…

Tojo was Prime Minister of Japan during World War II. The Tojo I met in Chicago in 1983 was a chihuahua whose owner brought him into a bar in Berwyn, a suburb on Chicago’s near-southwest side. Tojo would take his place on the bar and lap up beer (not good for dogs, I know; but it was 1983 and people were ignorant of such things in Berwyn).
The dog’s owner was in his 60s. I asked him if he served in World War II. He said he was a plumber. I smiled and commented he probably did…

There are rumblings that Bank of America ("BoA") is in danger of failing. But wait---I thought we were inculcated with the notion it was too big to fail? Anyway, check the various websites. Whatever the number---and I have read as high as $75 trillion, as in take one billion and multiply it by 1,000----BoA has transferred so-called toxic assets it had acquired from other banks and transferred them to a federally-insured fund. In other words, the same folks who screamed they needed a…
