Spiffy sentiments about "something different" and "better" from IN Democratic convention

On 6/6/26, after weeks of acrimony, Indiana’s State Democratic Party, at convention, nominated Beau Bayh [FN1] for Secretary of State (“SoS”). That office is created by Indiana’s Constitution. [FN2] As in many States, the SoS is Indiana’s chief elections officer. [FN3] 1/14

There are several factors that lent to an environment ripe acrimony in the weeks pre-convention. 1) Last December, in special session, the Indiana Senate voted down a mid-decade re-drawing of U.S. House districts…

This country not founded as Christian, Part 9 (& things to download to thumb drives, put in a Faraday cage & bury)

New Jersey uses day/year; ratification “this 18th day of December in the year of our Lord 1787" and since independence “the twelfth.” [FN1]

Connecticut twice uses “A.D.”; ratification: “January Ninth Anno Domini, 1788.” [FN2] 1/12

Massachusetts uses the deist “Supreme Ruler of the universe” [FN3] [FN4] & notes ratification the “7th day of February Anno Domini 1788.” [FN5]

Georgia’s dates are unadorned by reference to deity, but ratification: 1/2/1788 “in the year of our…

"MFV": My Faith Votes is another far-right religious group

11/5/24: could be our last elections. At CPAC a speaker hailed “the end of democracy”adding “All glory is to God.” [FN1] [FN2] On social media, groups mesh evangelical Christianity & politics. Most operate on a misconception easily dispelled. One such group: 1/9

“My Faith Votes” (MFV) says it is “a non-partisan movement” to get “Christians in America to vote in every election.” [FN3] It mentions “90 million Christians in America” [FN4] With its claim as “non-partisan,” MFV seems…

As a GOP nominee for any office I cannot support combat veteran/neofascism opponent Destiny Wells (Dem) or Libertarian Jeff Maurer. against the GOP nominee

In November, the office of Indiana Secretary Indiana Secretary of State (“SoS”), established by IN’s Constitution, Art. 6, § 1, will be on the ballot. Our system of government depends upon our right to vote being safe. Indiana’s SoS is IN’s chief elections officer. I.C. 3-6-3.7-1. 1/5

In 2020, Connie Lawson, a Republican, was SoS and there were no credible complaints of voting irregularities. Destiny Wells, Democratic Party candidate for SofS, is a combat veteran who has been…

GOP nominee for Sec'y of State, IN's chief election officer, believes "The Big Lie."

Diego Morales is the surprise IN GOP nominee for Secy of State. State GOP rule Rule 1-6: one “who openly supports a candidate who opposes GOP candidate is not in good standing” & may be removed. Rules 3-22 & 3-23. That means free speech is not a value in IN’s GOP. 1/4

Mr Morales (1) believes The Big Lie, i.e., trump won in 2020 & thus (2) Mr Morales, if elected, could impede, rather than help ensure, fair elections. I have not said I support either Jeff Maurer, the…

Pres Biden's State of the Union & Gov DeSantis's disrespect

I found Gov DeSantis’s tweet yesterday saying he wouldn’t send Nat’l Guard, as was requested, to “Biden’s State of the Union,” offensive. DeSantis is one of two early front-runners in the GOP nomination race for POTUS, 2024. He meant to show no respect to Pres Biden. 1/4

The GOP went off the rails a few years ago. We can’t allow a distinct minority to control a not-for-profit corporation that is structures so as to not be accountable to voters. We have to take over that party &…

Alex Jones was there on Jan 6: how'd he miss all the disguised leftists?

Fifty-four percent (54%) of Republicans polled believe leftists were behind the January attack on the Capitol. Apparently watch dogs of the far right, such as Alex Jones, missed this particular conspiracy. Jones should have an inside track on this info. He was in DC on January 6.

Here are possibilities. 1) Alex Jones is part of the Deep State/Antifa (DSA). That’s fine except Jones was in DC on 01/06 and spoke to the mob. Maybe he sought to foment violence to cast trump, et al, in a…

"Sniff the Glove": Prosecutors' demands for a party that seeks discoivery

Justice requires open Courts and public trials. (U.S. Const. Amend. VI; Ind. Const. Art. I, § 12.) In the name of efficiency Courts substitute computers for people. Courts invoke privacy and a person’s security as they shut out public scrutiny.

Whether brought by the Government, the State, the People or Commonwealth, the prosecution has great advantages. First, it chooses the charges and when to file. Second, it has assets such as police and labs. At the very least the Accused has a…

How we can be & have been harmed by erosion of separation of government & religion

Tonight at 8 p.m. on “Mouthwash,” a FB podcast: “Separation of Church and state.” Micah Beckwith and I shall debate. There are reasons religion and government have been kept separate in this country. The Reformation was on the Framers’ minds in 1787. Let’s address today.

If religion is to be a part of our government, since a majority of adults (Pew Research, January, 2021) profess to be Christians, one may infer that god would be in charge. (Mr Beckwith, et al, would insist.) Problems…

Separation of church & State. History is a complex thing.

Tuesday at 8 p.m. on “Mouthwash,” a FB podcast, minister Micah Beckwith and I shall debate separation of church and State. Mr Beckwith claims to be a “constitutionalist” and seems to believe the original intent of the founders of this country was this country be Christian.

1) If we discuss The Constitution, the people who wrote it are called The Framers. This is not mere word play. The National Archives calls the 55 delegates “Framers,” as delegates referred to themselves as building…

Fun debate Tuesday at 8: separation of church and State

Short-term it is easier to ignore people who hold abhorrent views than to engage with them. We like to remain in “bubbles.” I ask that people please watch the FB podcast “Mouthwash,” hosted by John Schmitz, Tuesday at 8 p.m., for a debate about separation of church and State.

My opponent will be Hamilton County minister Micah Beckwith. When Mr Beckwith ran for the 2020 GOP nomination for INCD5, his website noted his (1) “deep understanding” of U.S. history” and (2) how he wanted to…

Tues, 8 p.m. on "Mouthwash": Micah Beckwith v Me.

On Tuesday, at 8 p.m., on “Mouthwash,” a podcast produced and hosted by John Schmitz, I shall debate separation of church and State with Micah Beckwith, a pastor at several churches in counties north of Indy. This should be fun and informative.

Mr Beckwith was a candidate in the 2020 GOP primary for INCD5. His campaign website notes his “deep understanding of American history....” and he’s “answering the call to take the fight to Washington to defend true CONSTITUTIONAL conservative…

Will the Confederate "Stars and Bars" be banned from booths at YOUR Indiana State Fair?

A trip to the Indiana State Fair in the early 1960s was a festive event. The place seemed huge to young eyes. There were a lot of pieces of farm and construction equipment. In the livestock barns, the old man would point out the various breeds of cattle, sheep, and goats and explain why each was unique as the kids who were there to show the animals sweated and lounged on bales of straw or fold-out chairs. The really big room with aluminum siding sales pitches was okay. On the midway, some…

"Body, Mind, Spirit" festival this weekend at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

This is the second year we have been privileged to cover the festival. I simultaneously am skeptical of and welcome to approaches to reality and healing arts outside the dominant paradigm for such matters in our society. This contradictory attitude reflects splits of other types inherent in human thought and existence.  I had the opportunity, in 1976, to talk with Ken Kesey, who wrote “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “Sometimes a Great Notion,” and was the central figure og the Merry…

Make Those Children in Poverty Work Because There's No "Free Lunch"! says a Congressman on a House Appropriations Subcommittee.

U.S. Representative Jack Kingston, a Republican from Georgia, has said children from families in poverty, who qualify for free lunches at school, should be forced to work for those meals. He suggested the children sweep the cafeteria floor to understand what it means to work. He said children should learn there is no such thing as "a free lunch." State Senator Stacey Campfield of Tennessee has introduced legislation in the Volunteer State that would cut State welfare benefits to parents…

Part Two: Does the State have the power to outlaw red shirts?

Whether the color is blue, an example I used last week, or red, as I shall use today, the question still is the same. Do States, or their political subdivisions such as counties and cities, have power, under the United States Constitution, to outlaw whatever conduct they wish under so-called police powers of the States? I use the color red today as I found studies that have determined the color red can cause some people to become angry. I will address that in a moment.

Libertarian Party: to optimise legitimacy and attract voters, part 1.

The Libertarian Party has seemed to be an also-ran in elections in Indiana, and other States. This year the Libertarians ran Rupert Boneham for Governor and Brad Klopfenstein for Lieutenant Governor. Rupert impressed me as intelligent, thoughtful, and caring. He is not fine-polished as a public speaker, but makes up for that in sincerity and smarts. (Brad’s smart, too, but the focus was on the lead on the ticket.) Still, Rupert garnered only some four percent (4%) of the vote.

he State Fair: an annual treat.

When I was a kid, we all (kids in the neighborhood) looked forward to the Howard County Fair. That was a must-see. A stop at the Lions Club tent for food came first. We would hit several other tents and be given various crap—amongst which always was a yard stick—for free. We had to walk through the farm implement area and sit on tractors and earth movers. The miscellaneous "big tent" seemed always to have a vacuum cleaner that kept a ping-pong ball suspended in air. The rides were the big…

The Sate Fairgrounds Coliseum: name it after Hoosier-born Carole Lombard.

The name of Pepsi© no longer will adorn the roof of the Indiana State Fair Coliseum. A dispute arose over the amount to be paid for further "sponsorship" of the building. The State Fair Board wanted more money. The plan is to renovate the facility over the next two years.

I do not like governmental entities to accept money to name structures, built with taxpayers’ money, for the function of billboards. I know: as a fan of the Cubs I realize my team plays at Wrigley Field. The…
